Environmental Toxins and Why Detox Programmes Matter More Than Ever

We are exposed to more environmental toxins today than at any other point in human history. From heavy metals in our food and water to pollutants in the air we breathe, these invisible chemicals are quietly affecting our health — and even how quickly we age.

As a longevity medicine practitioner, I see the impact of toxic burden on my clients every day. Many arrive with fatigue, brain fog, hormonal imbalances, or skin issues that have no obvious cause. Often, the missing piece is what is happening inside their bodies at a cellular level.

What Are Environmental Toxins?

Environmental toxins are harmful substances we encounter through everyday life. They include:

  • Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic — found in contaminated water, certain foods, cosmetics, and old paint

  • Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including pesticides, dioxins, and industrial chemicals that linger in the environment for decades

  • PFAS or "forever chemicals" — used in non-stick cookware, food packaging, and water-resistant fabrics, these resist breakdown and accumulate in the body over years

  • Air pollutants from traffic, industry, and indoor sources like cleaning products and building materials

The uncomfortable truth is that no matter how carefully we live, complete avoidance is impossible. A 2025 review in Science of the Total Environment confirmed that heavy metals remain one of the most widespread categories of environmental pollutants, contributing to multiple forms of pollution and posing serious health risks.

How Toxins Accelerate Ageing

One of the most striking findings in recent science is the link between environmental chemicals and biological ageing.

A major 2025 study from Stanford University, published in the journal Aging, examined data from 2,346 US adults aged 50 to 84. Researchers led by Dennis Khodasevich and Andres Cardenas measured 64 different environmental chemicals in blood and urine samples, then compared these to eight different epigenetic ageing markers — essentially, biological clocks that measure how fast your body is ageing at the DNA level.

The results were clear: cadmium and lead exposure were significantly linked to accelerated biological ageing. These are not rare industrial chemicals — they are substances many of us encounter regularly through food, water, and our surroundings.

This means that toxic exposure is not just causing disease in the traditional sense. It is speeding up the ageing process itself, increasing the risk of age-related conditions including cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and cancer.

Why Testing Matters

Most people have no idea what toxins are accumulating in their bodies. Symptoms of toxic burden — tiredness, poor concentration, digestive problems, skin issues — are easily attributed to stress or simply "getting older." Without testing, the real cause can go undetected for years.

At PAAR, we offer two key diagnostic tests to identify toxic exposure:

Environmental Pollutants Comprehensive Profile — This advanced panel measures a wide range of environmental chemicals in your body, giving us a detailed picture of your toxic burden. It helps us understand which specific pollutants may be affecting your health and guides a targeted detox strategy.

Minerals Balance and Toxicity Test — Using a simple hair sample, this test screens for 17 toxic metals (including lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic) alongside 22 essential elements. It reveals not only what harmful metals may be present but also whether key protective minerals are at healthy levels. Hair analysis is particularly useful because it reflects exposure over a longer period than a single blood test.

Our Approach to Detoxification

Detox is a word that gets used loosely, but at PAAR we take a clinical, evidence-based approach. Our Detox Protocol Programme is designed to safely support your body's natural detoxification pathways, guided by your individual test results.

Here is how it works:

  1. Test — We begin with comprehensive toxicity testing to identify exactly what your body is dealing with

  2. Analyse — Your results are reviewed in detail, and a personalised detox plan is created based on your specific findings

  3. Support — You receive a specialist consultation to guide you through your programme, with nutritional, supplement, and lifestyle recommendations tailored to your needs

  4. Monitor — We track your progress and adjust the plan as needed to ensure your body is clearing toxins effectively

This is not a juice cleanse or a weekend fast. It is a structured clinical programme designed to reduce your toxic load and protect your long-term health.

Taking the First Step

If you have been feeling "not quite right" and cannot pinpoint why, or if you are simply proactive about protecting your health as you age, understanding your toxic burden is a powerful place to start.

Environmental toxins are a modifiable risk factor — meaning that once we know what we are dealing with, we can take meaningful steps to reduce exposure and support your body in clearing what has already accumulated.

I would love to help you take that first step. You can explore our testing options and detox programmes at paar.london, or get in touch to discuss which approach might be right for you.
